Thanks for the reply Charlie,

I never removed the cover on the side when I orginally removed the shifter,
so I might already be screwed. The shifter will not move any farther to the
right than the 3rd/4th gear plane. I'll take a closer look when I get home
this afternoon.

The spring part and plunger sounds like the anti rattle piece for the
shifter, should be a bolt like cover on the side of the housing that you
can put this in once the shifter is mounted.  I'd pull it out (shifter)
but take that spring loaded piece out first from the side so you don't get
it lost in the tranny as you will have a mess then.  See if it isn't
jamming the shifter somehow.  Going from memory R is far right and then
down.  I should remember I just drove mine yesterday...lol
