If the tire is too wide the sidewall angle will be wrong and the beading
will not sit squarely on the rim. Remember that all the torque is
transmitted through this contact between the lip of the rim and the tire
bead.

Thanks, Bob...I knew there was a reason. Hadn't heard of the rule of thumb
bein 1.3 times...I thoiught it might have to do with the way the tire bead
meets the rim bead or some such. So taking the thought to the extreme then
the low rider cars with the outrageously wide rims and the skinny tires are
ok? Nah, thought not... But good answers though.
