John-

You can pretty much do what you said to dig it out to the other car,
from the bottom.  You might have to cut or remove the exhaust, though.  
You can't get the diff innards without the housing since the upper front
bolts are not reachable without removing the whole unit.

OD's had different ratios than non-OD cars.  The flanges were of
different size on the earlier cars.  Check the catalogs for the
specifice year change over.  Otherwise, it should be a straight forward
fit.

The only problem is the unknown condition of the diff.  A rebuilt costs
about $200+-.  Contact Chris Prugh on the list about a rebuilt he got
from England for about that much dilivered, without having to dig for
it.
