I'd do a real quick "by-eye" check on crank endfloat first.  Less than
one toe-nail thickness of slop and I'd try to start it. :-)

A real knock sounds like bottom end troubles.

I would...but kinda gently if I thought that there might be a some
serious problems in there.  Don't wanna make it worse than it already
is.  

One nice thing about these cars is that you can pull the oil pan in
situ to inspect the bearings and crank.
