I think this might explain the problem--I found this doing a search of
deja.com archives. Most of the messages to rec.autos.makers.triumph were
this message, repeated over and over again:

"The recent newgroup for this group in my name was a forgery.

         rec.autos.makers.triumph is widely considered a bogus newsgroup
given
         that it has not been approved by accepted USENET group creation
         procedures.  Please remove the group from your active file."

As I mentioned earlier, someone did say they were going to start a
group, but apparently they did not know how to go about doing it. Of the
sample I searched (trying to get as many citations as possible by
searching for the keyword "my,") a great many of them were repeats of
the above message from a David C. Lawrence.

If there was such a group, it was not _bona fide_ and is probably
defunct.
