I've been told that one can combine the new r 134a with the older r12 with
out any modifications to the air conditioning systems. Does anyone know?

Absolutely not. When you change over you must flush out the system before
installing 134. It is not compatable with the oil used in R12 systems.

There is a sythetic R12 (isn't that a hoot! Synthetic R12) but I know
nothing about it.

I am also told that Propane works great, too. But if you get a hole in
your evap it can pool in the foot wells and it is flambable (but then so is
gasoline).
