this sure sounds like a choke problem to me.

1. test fuel pressure before both carbs with inexpensive fuel pressure tester
(which perhaps can be borrowed ?). or after pulling + lead off coil, crank
engine while holding fuel line (before carbs) over a paper cup. if it pump,
pump, pumps a goober of gas for each crank of engine into cup, you have gas.

2. pull spark plugs. are they black (i suspect) ? then you are way too rich
(as in choke is not opening). clean plugs while they are out. oh, make a
note - are front 3 plugs different color than rear 3 ? as in one carb is sick
and other is ok ?

3. hook up timing light and with vacuum line attached to distributor watch the
timing move as you move the rpm up from 800 to 1500 rpm (approx). as long as
you see it move you know the vacuum advance is working. check timing against
what your manual says. even if it is off, if it runs smooth when cold, it's
not gonna be the timing.

4. try starting engine when cold without using the choke. if the choke is
stuck on then the engine will start - right ?

5. check mixture. the best is that colortune tool you can get from lbc
suppliers. it really works great ! if you don't want to wait, just do this.
start car and let warm up. adjust mixture lean while carefully keeping track
of how many turns you are making with mixture tool (so you can put it back
where it was after this experiment). if you lean out both carbs all the way
and the idle does not go way down or it actually improves you know you have a
problem. if so, i would drive it (at best optimum idle just to see what the
performance is like. it may actually be better (once again if carbs are sick
/ choke stuck on). remember to set mixture back same amount of turns unless
you find some other setting by experimentation.

generally, if you have good spark when starting cold, you will have good spark
when engine is warm.

let us know what you found.
