If fitted correctly the originals also have a lip that catches that 
slot.  That and the flap on the top fitting over the top edge of the 
side curtain keeps it quite stable.

I don't recall a louder noise with the curtains and top in place... of 
course it has probably been raining every time I have driven it like that.
