It could be the clutch disk is stuck to the flywheel.  This normally happens
only if the car has been sitting for an extended period of time.  One quick
and easy fix that sometimes works is to stop the engine, engage a gear
(fourth,
preferrably), depress the clutch pedal and hit the starter.  This technique is
too easy to do not to try it.
