I would like to thank all, for responding to my query about which race
organization to join. I had already made my mind up before I asked the
question, but I wanted to get other people's opinion first.
I remember turning up at a vintage race in Pocono, Pa with a TR3 and not
allowed to race, because the race org. had not yet accepted it as a
proper vintage car. I could however petition the board to allow
acceptance of the TR3. Needless to say I never bothered turning up at any
of their events again.
I have been following historic rallying in Europe for about 10 years now,
and I like the concept that to race historic or vintage cars NO
modifications are allowed other than those which were available at the
time the car was built.
There are some grand-fathering rules and some of the organizations are
stricter than others. However I am a believe that if you are going to
race a vintage/historic car than no modifications can be done to the car
, which were not available for the particular year of manufacture - I
think that is what the essence of vintage/historic racing is all about.
3 Years ago I went to the Phili Historic Race week-end and saw almost
every MG TD with Mallory electronic ignition !!! =- what's the point ?
you may as well race in SCCA IT class.
Also I accept that vintage racing is more of a gentlemanly form of racing
and that winning is not the be all and end all. I do NOT see vintage
racing as a "tune-up" for pro-rallying (and I hope I did not imply it),
but more of a supplement to the pro-rally calendar. August, Sept and Oct.
is a fairly inactive period in the pro-rally calendar.
