Mike,

To have all cars on the same hard compound tire would take tire selection out
of the variables that racers have to deal with. This would hardly be an
authentic situation though. I never heard of a spec tire in any series I was
aware of. I would expect that the reason was the same as now; simply that not
enough racers could agree on how it would be administered, and what the tire
would be.

We now have to make logical choices on levels of preparation and date of
appropriate specification. You ask why SVRA hasn't ( made pre-1962 cars run
on the Dunlop-L) done this?

The reason is that we allow cars within certain groups to update to various
time lines. In our groups 1 & 3, that time line is 1967. Dunlop L's were out
of fashion by then.

Other groups "require" cars to be prepared to year of manufacture specs. This
would mean that most Bugeye Sprites would have drum brakes. How many of those
are out their racing?

My point is, that many clubs have very strict rules on paper, but look away
when asked to enforce them. I know VARAC stands behind their rules, as does
SVRA. We both probably could do a better job of it, but there has to be a
balance. Otherwise we lose entries at an unacceptable rate.

Only SVRA publishes car spec sheets, and has research capabilities for its
members.

BTW, I have fitted Dunlop L (204) tires to our rear engine Huffaker F/jr. and
would be upset if MR rescinded their rule. The non-complying cars could be
considered F/C cars, and run in that class. That is they way SVRA handled it
this past year even though we weren't MR affiliated.
