I've never towed a car trailer w/o brakes, but then it's never
weighed less than 5000lbs either.

I think what you are proposing is doable as long as you pay
close attention to the vehicle brakes and use low gears
when going downhill.

And I'll throw in the obligatory plug for load-equalizing
hitches and sway control.......
