The gas prices here in California are higher than nationwide averages
due to the special low-smog formulations required here, which also give
it an egregiously short shelf-life (3 months max before it turns to
sludge!). When the Tosco refinery in the East Bay was shut down after an
explosion and fire and with the nearby Chevron refinery operating at
reduced capacity due to... you guessed it, an explosion and fire - low
availability sent the middlemen scrabbling to lock up a supply and
wholesale prices were bid up by about 70 cents a gallon. Unfortunately,
because of the unique formulation used here, it isn't possible to just
ship in some more gas from out of state. Prices should settle down some
in a few weeks, but recent OPEC moves may reduce the amount of relief we
can expect.

I'm beginning to miss the wife's '84 Toyota Corolla and it's 30+ mpg on
regular.
