I don't know either but my speedo works and the mileage is piling on and I
don't think the 5 speeds came with the 90 elbow, at least the cars I broke and
my friend's 2L doesn't have one.

  One more time.......I am sitting here with a 90 degree speedo adaptor off of
  my 67.5 1600 in my hand. No matter which end that I spin clock-wise, the
  opposite end spins counter clock-wise. Now I haven't checked, but the only
  way that this could work is if the pick-up on the transmission runs
  "backwards" and the 90 degree converts it to the correct direction for the
  speedo.
