        You know when I was a kid my first car was  a 55  chev  265 3 speed , 
which  I  ran to death. One of the first  things I discovered  was that in a  
quarter mile  I could thrash it threw the gears and it would  run  80mph or I 
could get it into high gear way early and it would still do 80 in the quarter,  
speed was and still is a function  of   weight  verses horsepower / torque. Out 
on the salt  weight is displaced  by wind resistance.  If you have a car that 
has trouble making the speed for the long course I,m  sure  lots of gears are 
helpful. But basically it will just help you get  to the 2 1/4  mile in less 
time, but your speed  is a function of the power you have.  Am I correct ?  I 
get my car in high gear  early  and let it pull  as hard as it can without 
braking traction, I find it's much easier to tell if my tune up is correct  
also than if it is pulling with little resistance  because of gearing.

Keith,

You think that you are hurting, I run a direct-drive, (no converter)
two-speed Powerglide that drops from 8000 RPM to about 5500 RPM when it
shifts. There are different schools of thought on the subject, but quite
frankly, I'm not sure that it hurts us that much, we still are capable
of a 205 MPH 1/4, with little left at the 5 mile. 

If you had fifteen miles under power the speed attained is the result of
Horse Power versus the Resistance to forward motion. The greater frontal
area cars reach the wall in a shorter distance. It is my opinion that
the gearing you speak of is a bigger factor for the streamliners.
