On the contrary, the manual, as Lawrie said, was written about a new unit,
and engineers often work under "ideal" conditions. But who wants to rebuild
their overdrive because it clunks, if you can make it last forever by
clutching even though the manual says it is unnecessary? Think about it:
What harm are you doing by removing the force applied by the engine from
the equation, as long as it shifts out smoothly? And what harm is that
"clunk" doing? I guarantee that the clunk is not healthy, as it indicates
metal hitting metal somewhere, and hard.

What I don't understand is: If the consensus of listers with decades of
experience says to do something, who the hell cares what the manual says?
