We're on the wrong list for a flood of answers - now,if it were the MGT
list...!

Like you, I had driving experience on a pre-war Chevy pickup with a
similar transmission, then a buddy's Model A ford.  

The question got answered, a couple of times, but I imagine most folks
didn't understand it.  This is something that's a hell of a lot easier
to learn by doing than by reading about it!  But, if someone really
wants to understand the process, and has an extraordinary amount of time
on their hands, get a book with a good diagram of a manual transmission
and work through the process of upshifting and downshifting.  Better
yet, tear one apart on the workbench and follow how the gears transmit
motion.

I, for one, would enjoy reading the inimitable Gaylord approach to a
clear explanation of this process - without resorting to use of a
diagram!
