The '79 plus 8 is probably the same as a 1992 Plus 4 so here goes
The second cable is the heater flow valve. (when new the knob has a fire
representation on it). This connects to a water valve in the flow to the
heater from the engine and is the only temperature control. Its a near 140
degree movement of the valve so it is pretty stiff. I can turn mine on (by
pulling) but not off; I have to get under the bonnet (sorry hood) and move
the valve by hand for that.
The seats are on front to back wooden rails that have 2 bolts each directly
to the plywood. Seems ok, but I guess you want to make sure the plywood is
in good shape. Either that or put supplementary wheels on the seats :-)

I have a '79 Plus 8, partially disassembled that I am piecing together.
There
are 2 cables attached to the steering column. Both are steel flex cables
with
a sliding steel cable inside. One is obviously the choke cable, which works
fine.
I have yet to determine what the 2nd cable is for. The pull mechanism for
the
other cable has notches in it.
Does anyone know what this 2nd cable does?
Also, are the seat rails attached on the steel crossmembers in the front and
the rear, or are they simply attached to the wood?
I bought two really nice leather seats, but the rails do not extend from
crossmember to crossmember. I can only attach them into the floor board
which
to me seems very weak. I' d rather be attached to the frame than to plywood.
How do they come from the factory?
