I could not agree more.  When our son was first learning to drive I took
him to a parking lot in an industrial area and set out the pylons.  When he
could accelerate, brake hard, turn, shift and control the old Volvo
smoothly without getting crossed up, then we went and began the process of
learning about traffic.  IMHO it is a learning to drive method that should
be mandatory.
