Ryan,
         I would look at the shifter linkage bits.. from the top. 
Remove boot; remove 3 screws, plate, spacer, lever, plastic cup and 
spring. If any of those are missing, you get what you got. Take a 
look at a parts diagram to be sure that stuff is there in order. You 
would've removed the shift lever when you removed the tranny, maybe 
all the pieces didn't go back in?
         I recall this exact scenario at a racetrack in 
Michigan.  Borrowed pieces from a street car to get going.
