Brad,
I've had clicking UJs last for several thousand miles -
progressively getting louder, but they still held out. There is a risk that
as the UJ wears you may end up with the holes in the yokes becoming oval,
which means a new flange or shaft is required (depending which holes have
become oval!).
Regarding the bearings, the front ones are a doddle to replace. If
you can already hear noises from the rear bearings, then budget for a new
halfshaft. The bearing has no inner race and runs directly on the shaft - by
the time you can hear that they're worn, there WILL be some shaft damage.
While I've neglected UJs and taken my chances, I treat the rear bearings
with absolute respect.
