I think I am correct in saying that this should not be lubricated by any
form of oil or grease but by graphite powder.  (If I am wrong I am sure
someone will let me know!)

You can get some graphite powder by splitting open a pencil and rubbing the
lead on some fine sandpaper.  Clean up the motor shaft first to remove all
the old accumulated gunk and then dust it with the graphite.  the pinion
should be a very smooth movement.
