That depends on the operator, and the tool. I have a mandrel that I can
put on my wood lathe to hold buffing wheels. Being a lathe, it's variable
speed, so I can set it to go real slow.
I usually have it on the second slowest for wire-wheel work. Any faster
and it starts to spit wires out (which are a pain- especially in wool)
If you have a converted bench grinder, then it will be moving real fast-
so to avoid heat buildup, don't use a lot of pressure. It will take
longer, yes... but it'll do a nicer job!
Some things require patience.
I've also found that you can produce a fairly nice finish with a hand-held
(ie. non-powered) wire brush. No heat buildup- but a lot of bicep
buildup! I have a stainless-steel bristled one, with two hand-holds; it's
nice because I can leave it out in the rain :-)
