But why only 3rd?  Something must have buggered the teeth as they meshed.  
Simply a hard turning
gear ought not to have done this in isolation to (for example) second gear.

OTOH, I have no answers.  Did you find any big steel pieces at the bottom?  Did 
they look
chewed?

worked itself into the thrust washer and thus not giving enough "float" to
