Randall as usual is more thorough in his explanations and he is correct
about the suspension [or not] of the dirt. Detergent oils will foam
however, and the suspended dirt exacerbates that. What you have,
particularly in the differential, is a big agitator [the gear cage and ring
gear] that are operating at the oil/air interface. With a detergent oil you
can get three layers, oil/foam/air. The foam layer will not give the level
of lubrication that the oil is displaced would, so the effective oil level
is lower that desired in the case.
