The reason 70W gear oil = 30W motor oil is (or so I'm told) oils are rated
at operating temperature and since motor oils typically operate at higher
temperatures than do gear oils (i.e. engines generate more heat than do
transmissions) oils with the same viscosity characteristics will receive a
higher numeric rating since it is rated at a lower temperature.
