Ah, the Lotus is a special case.  I finally hit on the 
correct maintenance technique for my Lotus Cortina: 
Every two weeks, I'd tear up a hundred-dollar bill into
tiny fragments and stuff them down into the oil filler
cap.  It had exactly the same effect on reliability as 
performing the recommended maintenance on the car, and it 
was a lot cheaper.
