I agree. I spent many hours trying to figure out a roll bar that would
provide protection and still fit under the soft top. If it doesn't connect
to the frame, forget it. Solve that problem then move on to head clearance.
Two inches sound good. The only solution to that problem is recline the seat
(given your current height) so you have the two inches. If you don't have a
5-point harness system all of the above is a mute point. Ask Dale E. He had
the best equipment available and he's still dead.

I built a roll bar that is connected to the frame, clears the soft and hard
top, provides 2.0" of clearance for my 6.0' body, has a 6 point harness and
has a brake light attached. I still drive the car as if it doesn't have a
roll bar. Remember Murphy's law.

Car safety isn't science. I know that if I had a lab perfect roll-over the
rollbar might not keep my head from getting a pretty good whack. But in real
life all sorts of physically complicated things happen in car crashes. For
my money, I bet that having a good solid piece of metal above is gonna give
you more protection, more often than not -- and I'd dare anyone to get in
enough different types of car crashes to prove it one way or another.

You all probably know my opinion on the whole rollbar deal but I'll share it
again anyway. The rollbar needs to be tall enough so that when a line is
drawn from the roll bar to the front of the car where it will hit the
ground, the drivers head will be 2" below the line. For a roadster that
means the roll bar needs to be much taller than will fit under a top.
Anything less than that will provide no protection (ZERO) to the driver or
passenger. It is only for vanity at that point. My advice is to leave the
rollbar out and operate the top easily.
