  While I would prefer to keep emissions equipment installed, the designs used
in the late seventies were anything but well thought out.  On LBCs improper PVC
designs, Z-S carbs with lousy cold start enrichment, Cats directly under the
carb provide ignition of leaked fuel.  Frankly the company didn't have enough
money to do a proper job.  Other companies were no better feedback carbs, miles
of hoses etc.  Properly set-up the Weber downdraft can be made to run quite
cleanly (it was CARB approved).  However the original post was trying to survive
with an MG as her only vehicle (not easy but possible).  In that case she should
do her own maintance and farm out larger jobs after reading up on how it should
be done.  Eventually the larger jobs will not seem that difficult (there not)
and can be tackled.
