You must make plenty more sacrifices to Lord Lucas than I do. They don't
call him the Prince Of Darkness for nothing. The Lucas alternators are
unreliable at best. Yes, some people have alternators for years without
problems. But when they go, it's not easy getting a quality rebuild. And
that whopping 34 amps doesn't put out much excess for things like an
electric fan, halogen lights, etc... Once again, some people have no
issues running tons of stuff on their Lucas stuff. But I like my system
charging at 14+ volts, having bright lights at night, in the rain with the
wipers on, the top down, and the engine cool. If you plan for the worst,
you'll only be unpleasantly surprised 75% of the time. <grin>

Hey Chuck, why do the English drink warm beer? Cause LUCAS makes
refrigerators too....

Mike

PS: There aren't many companies that make their alternator pulleys out of
two halves pressed together. Any idea how frustrating it is to limp home
when the alternator pulley separates and keeps flipping off your belt every
100 yards? Answer: Very...

An even easier solution is to use a single wire internally regulated delco
alternator. You can buy them anywhere, and you just run the hot wire from
alternator to battery, nothing else. But once you have a new alternator
installed, why is getting another one on short notice such a worry? I
usually get 3-4 years out of an alternator on a jeep, and the only reason it
fails that fast is the winch puts a tremendous load on it.
