I couldn't agree more!!!   We should be our own judges of what we've done.
It's easy for us to see how our efforts stack up against others by comparing
our cars to the other restorations at the car shows ourselves.  If our cars
don't measure up to some of the more detailed restorations, we will know
immediately and can decide if we want to put more time and money into
re-doing it to satisfy our own quests for perfection.  Competition is good
(and essential) in business, but has no place in hobbies.
