Martin - do you own a pair of forceps?  If not, buy a pair, available at 
most medical supply cos, and sometimes available at auto swap meets along 
with dental picks, etc.  They are invaluable for tightly holding onto small
parts like window crank pins until you can get the pin in place and then 
use a small punch to drive the pin all the way in.

Also -- what  commonly contributes to windows that are hard to crank up and
down?

Probably a very heavy spring tension.  Try cutting the spring down a wind 
or two to reduce the tension.
