In the early '80s I had a piece of crap Pontiac four cylinder car. In the
middle of a trip to Fl. with the wife and two screaming kids the engine
started to make a loud rapping sound. After finding the nearest service
station, the mechanic (yes they still had mechanics at service stations back
then) listened to the noise and proceeded to dump Automatic transmissions
fluid into the carb. It smoked like hell for a while but the noise went
away. His diagnosis was a piece of carbon stuck to the top of the piston was
hitting a valve!! So I guess it does have some cleaning properties.
