John, unless I misunderstand something in what you say, this "trick" will
only work for the first pedal stroke. After that the hydraulic system will
self adjust to the same relative positions as before fitting the "spacers".

I think the real trick is to take out all the slop in the linkage. Pedal
holes, clevis pins, slave and master rod holes. Then bleed all the air out
of the system. Assuming hydraulics and clutch internals are fine, you should
once again have the full 5/8" of travel.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
