Depends what you mean by surgery. Look at these two sites:

Based on my experience in my TR6 (and my other car, VW GTI) I recommend
relays and E-code lights. Huge improvement. Basically follow what they say
on these two sites and you'll be glad you did. Oh, and please avoid the blue
tinted bulbs -- junk.
