Well, that's a thorny topic ... there were some terrible strikes when
management didn't knuckle under and give the unions what they wanted; and
people got killed over it. I've come close to blows myself, just for trying
to patronize businesses that were the target of a strike.

But I was thinking more of the "us and them" atmosphere that the unions
engender; an attitude notably lacking in their foreign competitors. Union
reps and employees seem to want their employers to go bankrupt, rather than
trying to help them stay afloat or even, heaven forbid, make a return on
their investment. If a Toyota worker sees a problem, he tries to fix it or
gets it fixed. If a GM worker sees a problem, he says "It's not my job" and
turns a blind eye. It's no wonder GM has more problems.

And I've heard the unions threaten to strike over cost reduction programs
(like robotics) even after being promised that no one would be laid off.
Last I heard, the AFL-CIO was threatening to go on strike if Goodyear
doesn't promise to reopen the plants that lose money ... talk about killing
the goose.
