Where did they come from?

If I had a reference that would tell me what lube oil flowrates racing
engines need, I could calculate  the power requirement from gearpumps.  So
far, I haven't found that reference.

I think Glenn has already pointed out words to the effect that-- if you
begrudge the HP used by the alternator-- you can get past the worry about
low ignition voltage by just piling in more battery.
