I have always understood the test as a Bore and Stroke relationship test...
Not a rod ratio test...

Like most of you I've been reading Magazine articles and books on engines
for years... Personally, I thought the article was Very credible.... mostly
because he talked about as many of the variables as he could within the
structure of a magazine... he gave us a reason to have the larger bore in
some cases... He was just playing with a general theory... not a specific
Race engine with a given purpose...

Lets put ourselves in David's situation and think about it for a minute...
he wants to write a magazine that has merit to the general Hot Rod public.
.. and he thought it would have merit to play myth busters with this general
theory... he kept it as close as physically possible and gave you the
outcome without hiding the variables... How much more can you ask?

I think it's obvious that each of the combinations could be optimized for
the given bore stroke relationships to give a much more impressive Hp or
Torque number... but that wasn't what he was doing... He didn't optimize
the Heads or port velocity's ... he didn't state why a long stroke motor
might be better for a given boost situation... or why the short might make
an interesting Nitrous motor...

Most importantly he didn't say THIS IS THE ANSWER... he just gave us the
information he gleened from a ton of work... after that it's up to us to
use it as we see fit.

These type of articles are why I started reading Hot Rod in the first
place...
