I put in a compact "dry" cell used by off-roaders. It's compact (about
7" by 7" by 5"), powerful (850 CCA), can withstand deep discharge, and
can be easily removed form a 1500 Midget with the bonnet up on it's
prop. The drawback is that it is expensive, but still less that the
Optima. The oddest thing is the charging recommendations, 10 Amp
Minimum, 50 Amp preferred.

Here's a link to the folks that make it: http://www.blackpanther.com/
And a place to buy one: http://www.absolutebattery.com/

I (inadvertantly) proved the battery's usefulness recently when I
unplugged the alternator to do some arc-welding (a precaution to protect
the diodes) and left it unplugged afterwards. Drove it around for three
days, with lights, wipers, heater fan, etc. On the third day, after I
started the car 5 times in close succession (within 30 minutes) I
noticed that the cranking was getting sorta slow. I investigated before
I headed home at the end of the day, found the alternator unplugged,
plugged it back in, and started the car and drove home. Mine is 3 years
old.

No financial interest, etc.
