Frank, Frank, Frank. Calm down. Relax. As someone who's been involved
with industrial welding equipment (and is proficient with same), for the
past 35 years; I gotta tell you Lincoln is one of the most respected names
in the industry. Home Depot (or any, other retail chain), however, is NOT
the place where you should be buying welding equipment. But, like my old
Porsche mechanic /mentor used to say: "everybody vant someting fe notting".
Frank, I mean no offense to you. I'm offering the following advice to
anyone who needs welding help:
If you are serious about welding, buy your welding equipment (Lincoln or
Miller-there are none finer) from an industrial welding supply house. You
may spend a few bucks more (but, not necessarily-they will often accept a
lower offer), but you will get a unit that works properly. If it doesn't,
they have the tech support personnel IN HOUSE to diagnose the problem and
make it work.
If you are a self-taught, or "body shop" trained welder; do yourself a favor
and take some classes from your local vocational-technical school. A MIG
welder is not a glue gun, although most novices seem to use it like one.
Such a course will be well worth the cost and will allow you to
practice/make mistakes/learn correctly for a whole lot less than you'd spend
by rushing out and buying a cheapie, imported welder and practicing on your
poor Spridget.

This was my second POS Lincoln that made it to the trash can by way of a
hearty SMASH on the garage floor. Although Home defect got burned for
this second one. BFD, it's as bad as the first.
I want something that welds (sticks metal together) works for more than
30 seconds at a time, something designed so the wire feed spool doesn't
tighten as it feeds, and something that will use the same brand of wire
when you finally do use up the small roll that came with it.
Lincoln spools of welding wire do NOT fit their POS welders.
Also, if Home F-in DEFECT sells the brand you recommend, I don't want
nothing to do with it.
Many companys are making crap to meet the Home DEFECT buying price. So
they sell their crap to other venders (like Woodworkers Warehouse,
bLOWES, and all those other chinese products places)
Are Millers still good? I started out with a Miller but took someone's
advice and downgraded to a POS MF Lincoln wannabe.
