I used to run the Solo II program for NYR in the late 1980's and early
'90's. I always turned a profit and kept a separate check book from the
rest of the region. NYR at the time was 100% geared towards road racing.
They didn't care about the Solo II program then so i never kept them
apprised of what was going on. I had the money to buy cones when I needed
them, buy new timing equipment when needed. What I never understood and
still don't understand is how does just about every solo program make a
profit ever year, yet quite a few road racing programs never turn a profit?
I know the NYR program rarely turned profits back then and they were
fielding 150+ race weekends! Please don't tell me it is the cost of the
track as compared to Solo II. If Lime Rock Park cost $5,000 for the
weekend, which I think was the price back then, the entry fees for a
Regional were $150 Just based on these numbers they took in $22,500! If I
charged $20 per entry and got 100 entries I took in $2,000. My lot rental
was $350 at the time. I cleared after taking into account all of the
mailings and such about $900-1,200 for each event. I put on 8-10 events
each year. I am not saying I always got 100 cars, It averaged between 60
and 120 cars. I was clearing at least $5,000 each year. At the end of the
season I had to turn the money over to the Regional Treasurer. I never saw
that money again and that is why I always bought my supplies before the
season ended.
I never saw the Regional dues, that money was ALL earmarked for the Road
Racing program. The NYR ran 4+ races each season, including double points
events where they charged double and gave double track time, but it still
cost the same basic rate for the track.
It might have changed slightly, but you can be certain that just about every
Solo II program is paying for the Road Racing program in your region.
