So, getting that women can,and do, fix and drive and fly - there are many
famous examples in history = check out some of the women at Brooklands before
the war -but I have to tell this little tale.

My parents had a Hillman Imp back in England (think Corvair - only because the
engine is in the back)

My mother was impatient, my father forgetful - thus this dialog

"Maurice (my father) - did you check the water in the car?"

"No Ronnie(my mother), I didn't. I will do it right now!"

"Never mind, I'll take care of it."

With that, my mother filled up the watering can and took care of business.

Off they went, and I settled down, with my then girlfriend, to an expected few
hours of 'time passing'

One hour passed when I heard some sounds in the driveway and looking out, I
saw a tow truck pulling in with our little black Imp at the rear. The
complexities of a rear engined car had eluded my mother and thus she filled
the petrol tank with high octane H2O believing the radiator to be at the front
(where in fairness, it always had been) rather than at the rear.

And on the other hand

There was a woman I used to hang with at my local bar back in the '70s' Tall,
and indeed quite attractive, and a very good mechanic. She and her friend
(blonde, and ditsy looking, though only when she wanted to be) would take
'malicious' delight in taking a car for 'diagnosis' by local mechanics. Her
'ditsy' friend would always be the owner and say 'ditsylike', there is
something wrong with my car. Then the 'mechanic' would put on his macho
mechanic hat and 'diagnose' and proclaim all the things (typically expensive
and excessive) that needed fixing. Nancy would then 'innocently' ask 'Surely
isn't it just (this or that), knowing full well that the fixes were minor and
cheap.

We had a lot of fun listening to her experiences and subtlely getting that the
'fairer' sex knows just as much as we do, if they are inclined to get it. The
differernce is not in capability (just look at Hedy Lamarr's patents) but in
experience or interest.

And in any case = purely sexist - a woman driving a sports car looks so much
better than a man (except for Ron Carter on the track <G>)

FWIW

Peter
