No,  not the trunk lid, at least on the MKI and MKII and one could leave the
filler on the MKIII on the side (wing), the filler would end up just where
it does.  On the MKI and II's the filler is on the rear deck below and just
to the right of the light clusters.  The trunk would be long and quite
shallow however because the tank, (which is a little bigger) and the spare
wheel take up the space below the deck.
