Or if you do not want to spend the money to purchase a reproduction of 
the correct thermostat and you want to save your head from cracking 
caused by localized super heating, you can use an incorrect thermostat 
and add something to restrict the radiator bypass flow without stopping 
it altogether.

I've stayed out of this thread so far because an early responder 
provided a link to my web page about how a TR3 & 4 thermostat works.  I 
don't have anything to say beyond what is on the page.  Though I am 
puzzled about the people who use incorrect thermostats and either close 
off the bypass flow completely or do not restrict it at all.
