Scott -- not quite. You won't be quite so rushed.

Let's assume AS is the first class -- of four in your heat, which also
includes ESP, SML, STXL. As of Tuesday, that heat had 54 cars in it, 21 of
which were AS.

So, in your method 1, you would be the 8th car out, your co-driver would go
10 cars later (assuming 5 minutes has passed), and then all the rest of AS,
*then* all of ESP, all of SML, all of STXL. And THEN, everyone begins their
second runs in the same order. So it would not be 11 cars before they are
back to you again, but more like 44 cars.

Likewise, in your second scenario, you are 2nd out, your co-driver is 16
cars later, and then it is some 40 others before they are back to you.

It is the change from driver 1 to driver 2 that the 5-minute rule really
comes into play (and when you need to move smartly through your changeover).
It sounds like Beth's idea on that is exactly what mine is when I run
grid* -- if you need another minute or two you got it, no problem, just
don't abuse it. I hate to rush drivers, I don't like them doing the chinese
firedrill because things get overlooked, or screwed up in the rush, not to
mention your concentration is shot. But I like to see them moving directly
and deliberately through their changeover, not goofing off or killing time
or chatting with other people on the grid at just that moment. Those who
focus on getting that done, and making sure everything that needs to be
tended to is tended to, usually I find are easily ready when it is time to
go.

(* not at Nationals; I have another job, but I usually do at Divisionals.
And at last year's Nationals when they needed extra help that's where I went
for a couple of shifts.)
