In my "mere" 28 years of autocrossing ( I started when I was 6, and moved to
California when I was 12...) :-) I've run in Stock, SP, P, M and STS. STS
and SM make a lot more sense than SP for streetability, require WAY less
commitment than Prep or Mod, and allow you to make the car more fun than
Stock. I doubt that another level between S and STS, or between STS and SP
will be needed. I can see more STS/STX type of classes, and SP classes
possibly decreasing in popularity in the future.
The category that has taken the hit is Prepared... There are too many
options for today's young folks that don't include taking a vehicle and
making it unstreetable. Overall that's a good thing.
I raced in STS this year with kids 1/2 my age (those are the older ones...)
in a car that I drove on the street every day, and I didn't even have to
change tires to run!
