Light is the answer. Paint the ceiling or the rafter white. If you have open
rafters, mount a couple of fluorescent fixtures pointing up - otherwise
that dark area "sucks" light up and makes the whole place seem much
smaller. Use a light color for the floor. I'm putting whiteboard
material on the walls to avoid dealing with paint; pretty cheap, cleans
up easily, reflects light like crazy.

Skylights are wonderful.
