Hi Greg,
Yes, it does work. If the slave is positioned too far back, there is not
enough movement in the piston to push the release arm far enough into
the pressure plate causing the clutch to still be turned ( it will
probably be slipping ) by the flywheel.
When the car is stationary, pressing the clutch pedal to select a gear,
the load of the transmission will stop the clutch plate from spinning
and the incorrectly adjusted clutch will slip against the pressure plate
and flywheel.
