One last input to this clutch issue.  Most trans will allow shifting without
a clutch.  Except from a dead stop of course as mentioned.  But as a
get-you-home method from clutch failure you can start the car in first gear
and go from there.  When you come to a traffic light you can often milk the
stop and not have to.  If you do you just restart in gear.  This will put
plenty of extra load on the starter but its perhaps better than leaving your
car on the side of the road - especially if its raining and your top is
shot!
