99% certain you will need to remove the cover.
But at least you don't have to remove the transmission (yet).


Firsts check the solenoid lever adjustment (that screw and locknut
opposite the solenoid). Then check the filter (behind the square plate on the 
left).
You might need to use a new cork gasket when replacing the cover, BTW.

If those are OK, you should next check the operating valve (under the hex plug 
on the top).

Then you can check the pump and non-return valve, which are behind the bigger 
hex plugs on
the bottom.

Ideally, at that point, if you haven't found the problem, you would have a 
hydraulic
test guage to check the operating hydraulic pressure.  I am not sure where one 
of these
can be gotten, since it has to read to about 600 PSI.
Probably a similar guage is used to diagnose and fix modern automatic 
transmissions?

If everything looks OK up to that point, then the cone clutch is probably shot, 
and
you have a problem...
